A city known for its intense nightlife, Barcelona is the perfect place to celebrate New Year’s Eve in the open air. The city is bursting at the seams with surprising places to discover over the course of this long, exceptional evening. Here are some addresses to check out if you want to have an unforgettable Spanish New Year’s Eve.
New Year’s Eve in Barcelona:
The 12 Spanish grapes
In Spain, there are two famous customs you must follow on New Year’s Eve. The first is drinking cava, and the second is eating a grape with each chime of the bell that rings in the new year.
To experience this beautiful tradition to its fullest, head to Las Ramblas, the main thoroughfare linking the city centre to the beach, where Barcelona’s residents come together to celebrate. Then make a wish — but for it to come true, you must eat the twelve grapes as the bells chime at midnight. How fun!
In the open air
You can also head to the heart of the Glòries neighbourhood and its Torre Agbar, located on one of the city’s most emblematic streets, which lights up with each of the 12 chimes of the bell at midnight (los cuartos). Here you can taste the famous 12 grapes from the heart of a convivial light show. It’s simply incredible!
You can also aim for Plaça de Catalunya, Plaça Reial, Las Ramblas or the front of the Jean Nouvel Tower, where the party continues long into the night.
After celebrating, head to the Villa Olimpica beach to start the first day of the new year in a dreamlike setting, surrounded by charming locals.
On a rooftop
Barcelona is one of the cities in Europe with the most sumptuous open-air rooftops. To get a bird’s eye view, head to the 6th and top floor of the Duquesa de Cardona Barcelona hotel, where you can enjoy an exceptional view of the Port of Barcelona and the Barceloneta neighbourhood, also known as “Moll de la Fusta”.
If you feel like enjoying dinner in this breathtaking setting before the clock strikes 12, the hotel’s elegant restaurant offers a very tempting New Year’s Eve menu: Clams and smoked salmon for appetizers, followed by a tender beef fillet for the main course and a “Jijona” mousse made with lemon creme, accompanied by a glass of liqueur, for dessert.
