The banks of the Seine in Paris are on the UNESCO World Heritage List given the richness of architectural masterpieces flanking the river. Nothing surprising about that, just head down the quays on a bike on a fine spring day, take a bateau-mouche tour or stroll along the 37 bridges to succumb to the charm of the capital!
At its heart, l’île Saint-Louis is home to the awe-inspiring Notre Dame, the Conciergerie (now law courts), Sainte Chapelle, the flower market... and the original Bertillon ice-cream store! On the right bank (Rive Droite), pass just in front of the City Hall (Hôtel de Ville) with its vibrant square, the Louvre, the Tuileries gardens, the Place de la Concorde... On the left bank (Rive Gauche), set out from the Arab World Institute and follow the river until you reach Place Saint-Michel, which is the centre of the student district. Continuing in this direction you will reach the Musée d’Orsay, the Assemblée Nationale (French Parliament) and then the Invalides to finish at the foot of the Eiffel Tower on the Champs de Mars.
The banks of the Seine to the East of Paris near the parc de Bercy on the other side opposite the four glass towers of the National Library (Bibliothèque Nationale de France) are also very pleasant
Did you know? The Saint-Augustin quays are the oldest in Paris. They were commissioned by Philip IV (Philip the Fair) when all of the river banks sloped gently to the river.
Romantic walks along the banks of the Seine
To keep your beautiful lady happy a little break at 29–31 rue Saint-Louis on the island is a must to taste their famous Berthillon chocolate sorbet. She will emerge conquered. Then take rue des Barres on the right bank to head into the heart of the Marais district. The Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais church lies at the heart of this little pedestrian street and is worth the detour. On fine days, the restaurants on the street set-up their tables outside.
