This splendour is the work of three great artists selected by Fouquet, a Minister of Louis XIV: architect Le Vau, painter-decorator Le Brun and landscape architect Le Nôtre. Fouquet had a bedroom built for the king, who never slept there !
One of the finest celebrations of the 17th century was held at Vaux le Vicomte. The event exuded elegance but was marked by high drama: Louis XIV, jealous of the beauty of the estate, had Fouquet imprisoned. He later hired the same three men to build Versailles… Today it is one of the few private palaces which can be visited in its entirety, from the cellars and kitchens to the cupola which offers a splendid view over the estate. The perfection of its ponds, statues, fountains and caves has earned these gardens the reputation of Le Nôtre's finest French garden. Strolling through them is a true feast for the eyes !
Tip: Candlelit visits are available on Saturdays from May to October and Fridays in July and August. 2,000 candles illuminate the palace and its gardens...
